Entertainment alliance acts to reduce workplace injuries

For Pennsylvania workers in the entertainment industry, it’s necessary to take special precautions to avoid serious workplace accidents. On-the-job injuries for entertainment industry employees can come as a result of electrical mishaps, falls and other hazards found on movie sets, in theaters and at concert venues. Because of the risks to health and life posed by such workplace accidents, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has renewed an alliance with industry groups for the next five years.

The purpose of the partnership with the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees is to reduce the number of workplace accidents and injuries in the industry by sharing information, resources and best practices. While USITT is a professional association, IATSE is the major trade union in the entertainment industry. All three groups in the alliance will work together to cut down on worker injuries.

While OSHA will provide resources on how it engages in rulemaking and undertakes initiatives for enforcement of federal safety regulations, the two industry groups will also work to share materials on significant workplace safety priorities in the industry. These include improving fall prevention and avoidance systems and the use of portable power technologies. This alliance operates alongside OSHA’s efforts to enhance workplace safety through targeted enforcement actions.
